The best thing about this hike is the view. Once you get on the 227 there's an amazing view of Spirit Lake and Mount Saint Helens, assuming the weather is clear.

When you first exit the parking lot you quickly cross the river and end up on the Boundary Trail. That leads you up a steep and exposed hill up to Norway Pass. There are some nice views of Meta Lake as you ascend, but it's not always pretty. The landscape is still damaged from the volcanic eruption in 1980.

If I returned to this area it would be satisfying to reach the peak at Mt Margaret. It's a big hike (11 miles and 2800 feet elevation) but I bet the view is even better. Either that or just add an extra mile or two for the full 227 loop, to get closer to Spirit Lake.

The start of the hike, heading out from the parking lot.

Going up.

Still barren from the eruption.

Nice view of Meta Lake as you ascend.

Some leftover ice in the shade.

Spirit Lake with Mount Saint Helens. The other hillside seems to have neat volcanic rock.

Great spot for lunch!

Morning mist in Packwood, as seen driving out to the hike.
